Open Source Software – Awaiting Strategy for Russia
A development strategy for open source software is expected to be introduced in Russia. The Ministry of Digital Development has set the deadline for September 2021. It is anticipated that this will help open-source developers receive government support and gain inclusion in the registry of domestic software. The state, in turn, will be able to more decisively implement such IT products within its departments, reducing dependence on foreign proprietary software.
UniPro has been developing open-source software for more than ten years. The first version of the open bioinformatics platform UGENE was released in June 2008. Three years later, our engineers became involved in the development and support of the open-source video conferencing system OpenMeetings. Both projects continue to evolve and have thousands of users worldwide. Recently, we have been developing our third open-source project, this time focused on Java technologies.
Since 2016, Unipro UGENE has been part of the national software registry and is registered with Rospatent. Apache OpenMeetings has not yet met the requirements for inclusion in the registry, but it is likely that this will change in the future.
